Candles Tips and Tricks

What type of wax do you use in your candles?

We chose Soy Wax for our jar candles for many reasons. Soy wax is non-toxic, renewable, and all natural, so you don’t breath in the harmful vapors, chemicals that paraffin candles can produce. Another benefit soy provides is it smells great when mixed with a good fragrance. Soy wax burns more cleanly and for a longer period of time than paraffin.

What kind of Fragrances do you use?

We use premium, fragrance oils with a hint of essential oils in our products. All our products have a higher percentage of fragrance oils that the wax can hold. It may seem overpowering on the first sniff but as you burn, the scent will flow evenly. Our fragrances are phthalate free.

Do you use cotton wicks or wood wicks?

Currently we are using lead-free, slow burning cotton wicks.

How do I ensure a perfect burn?

Trim your wick to a ¼ inch before lighting ( the first will be already trimmed).  Every time you burn your candle, you must burn it long enough for the wax to fully melt across the  edges of the container.  This will give you maximum fragrance and prevent tunneling down the center of the container and wasted wax.   Do not burn candle for more than 4 hours at a time. Keep out of direct sunlight to prevent discoloring. Never leave candle unattended. Keep away from drafts, children or pets.

How do I clean up a soy wax spill?

Soy wax cleans up very easily with mild soap and warm water. If spilled on a hard surface let the wax dry and harden before cleaning it. Once wax has hardened, simply scrape the wax off with a scraper or spatula, then wipe the remaining residue with a warm, soapy cloth.

Why does my candle have some discoloration? White frosting?

White frosting is common in soy wax candles. This will not affect the scent throw or the burn quality of the candle.  Frosting is a natural characteristic of pure soy that can be caused by temperature changes and sunlight. It is a good way to tell if a candle is really made with pure, all-natural soy wax.

My candle seems to be sweating. What is this?

Soy wax will sometimes release excess oil, especially in warmer climates. This will not affect the candle in any way and will not usually reappear after the initial burn. To remove the oil, use a paper towel to gently wipe it clean. And always remember to store your soy candles in a cool place, out of direct sunlight.

My candle flame is too big and smoking! What should I do?

Immediately extinguish a candle that has a wild flame. A large, smoking or flashing flame is dangerous and a sign that something is wrong. The cause may be a wick needing a trim or excess oxygen fanning the flame. If your wick is already trimmed to 1/4", then check for a draft. Heating vents, ceiling fans, windows or even a heavily used walkway or doorway can  cause a candle to smoke and produce a wild flame.

Why do my jars have black soot?

Any candle cannot completely be soot-free. Soy wax creates very less amount of soot. If you see any soot on your candles/jars, it can be cleaned with a damp paper towel after your candle/jar has cooled off.
